Introduction
The Department of Pathology spans an area of nearly 800 square meters, housing a range of specialized sections including the Routine Pathology Laboratory, Molecular Pathology Testing Area, Immunohistochemistry Laboratory, Cytology Laboratory, Diagnostic Office, and Archives Room. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments such as cryostats, fully automated staining and sealing systems, first- and second-generation sequencing instruments, in situ hybridization systems, liquid-based cytology preparation systems, automated digital cytology analyzers, and fully automated immunohistochemistry machines.
The department has established 11 subspecialty groups, focusing on areas such as bone and soft tissue, nervous system, breast, lymphatic and hematopoietic systems, head and neck, thoracic pathology, gastrointestinal system, urology, gynecology, cytology, and molecular pathology. It is particularly renowned for its expertise in neuropathology and pathology of bone and soft tissue tumors, achieving advanced levels within Guangdong Province.
Clinical and Diagnostic Achievements
In the past three years, the department has experienced continuous growth in its workload, handling nearly 60,000 external pathology cases annually, 38,000 cytology cases, and approximately 2,000 cases of tumor molecular pathology diagnostics and genetic testing per year. In 2023, the department earned the ISO 15189:2012 certification for “Medical Laboratories - Requirements for Quality and Competence”, becoming the 15th hospital nationwide to achieve this distinction after passing an on-site supervision review in 2024.
Diagnostic Techniques Offered
1.Biopsy Examination: Comprehensive biopsy analysis for all surgical specimens.
2.Cytological Examination: Includes cervical smears, sputum smears, pleural and peritoneal effusion smears, urine smears, and various tissue puncture smears. These techniques support large-scale tumor screenings such as gynecological TCT.
3.Intraoperative Frozen Section Examination: Provides rapid diagnoses within 30 minutes during surgeries, guiding decisions on the nature of lesions, surgical margins, and lymph node involvement.
4.Immunohistochemical Examination: Offers over 150 immunohistochemical testing items for disease diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and prognosis of certain malignant tumors.
5.Special Staining Techniques: Conducts over 20 special staining tests, including reticulin fiber staining, Masson staining, PAS, AB, and acid-fast staining, to aid in disease diagnosis and differentiation.
6.First-Generation Tumor Gene Sequencing: Facilitates mutation identification, structural analysis, and comparison for precision-targeted chemotherapy.
7.Consultation for Complex Cases: Accepts referrals for challenging or inconclusive cases from external institutions, providing expert consultations.
